And so this is Christmas

Scripture- Luke 2:7, 11-14

7 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn

11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:14 “Glory to God in the highest,And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

The story of Christmas - what is it really?! This time of year, people all over the globe come together to celebrate. Some, the birth of Jesus and others the gifts Santa brings on his sled which is guided by reindeer. Well, only one of these accounts I find in the Word of God, and that's the focus of this devotion.

You see, Jesus Christ our Messiah and Redeemer did come to this earth as a babe (first Advent). He did so in a form just like us (human), so that He could experience the trials and temptations we go through. He did this so that He would be better able to help us as we go through the same (Hebrews 2:18; John 1:14).

He came to show us that with God's help we can live an overcomer's life (Romans 8:37; 1 John 4:4 & 5:4,5) and no longer have to be slaves to sin (Romans 6:11,12). He came to buy us back or redeem us from the snares of Satan. He came to take our sins upon Him and die our death (1 John 2:2; 1 John 4:10). He came so that He could take back the keys of death and hell, and defeat death forever. (Rev 1:18) He came to make a way for us fallen human beings to be saved and live with Him eternally (John 3:17).

And that's why His first advent is so vitally important. It marked the beginning of his gospel ministry. It brought us the means of our Salvation and it is the greatest gift ever gifted!

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16 (NKJV)

This!, is the greatest love story ever told. I can't imagine sending my only son knowing that He would have to sacrifice his life. But, praise God that it was not my decision to make! Praise God that in His mercy (Psalm 103:8; 117:2) and out of His lovingkindness (Psalm 63:3), He laid down His Son's life for me! Me! and you! Yes, you! Undeserving though we be. Talk about love! (Ephesians 3: 17-19; 1 John 4: 8-9)

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for sending Your only Son just for me and for having so much love for me, even though I am not truly deserving. Thank you for this indescribable gift!, in Jesus' Name, Amen.
